Choosing how to decorate — and paint — a kid’s room can be tricky. If your child is a toddler, they may not have much of an opinion yet on things like wall color. If they’re elementary school-age, their opinions may change rapidly, and something they loved a year ago might be lame and boring today. If they’re a teenager, they may want something bold and fresh that’s out of your comfort zone.
At Brush Brothers, we’re here to help you bring your vision — and your child’s vision — to life. From expert painting services to wallpaper installation and removal, we do it all. If it’s time to refresh your kid’s room, keep reading to explore some creative ideas and expert tips.
1. Stick to Neutrals
If you’re not willing to repaint your kid’s room every time they want to change things up, there’s nothing wrong with sticking to neutral shades that fade into the background. Keep in mind that kids are messy, though — pure white may not stay pristine for very long. It’s smarter to opt for off-white, cream, beige, or greige tones that hide dirt more easily.
Make sure you choose the right finish, as well. If durability, longevity, and ease of maintenance is your goal, stay away from matte paints. Opt for eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss instead. These finishes are more stain-resistant and easier to wipe clean.
2. Add an Accent Wall
If your child’s taste changes on a dime but you still want to add pops of color here and there, consider opting for an accent wall. That way, when they decide that green is their new favorite color, you only have to repaint one wall instead of the entire room.
Accent walls are also the perfect opportunity to try creative paint techniques like faux finishing, glazing, and striping. You can use chalkboard paint to give them a canvas for their art, a metallic finish, or other special-effect paints to really add a sense of personality to your kid’s room.

3. Eye-Catching Murals
What better place for a mural than a kid’s room? Whether it’s a bold explosion of color or a more subtle geometric design, murals are an undoubtedly effective way to express your child’s personality and encourage their imagination.
If a custom-painted mural isn’t in your budget or within your skillset, you can opt for a wallpaper mural instead. There are endless options available, from fun character prints to lush botanicals to subtle patterns. For a kid’s room, peel-and-stick wallpaper is better — that way, when they’re ready for a change, it’s easier to remove.
4. Color Blocking and Half Walls
Create a fun and fresh feeling in your kid’s room by using color blocking. This could mean painting an archway around a focal point like a dresser, adding a thick stripe of an accent color all the way around the room, or creating a faux headboard by painting a rectangle at the head of the bed.
One of the most popular types of color blocking is only painting half of the wall. Typically, the top half will be neutral, while the bottom half is a bolder shade. This technique allows you to incorporate plenty of color without it feeling too overwhelming.
5. Don’t Forget Trim and Borders
There’s no better place than a kid’s room to think outside the box and get creative with your interior design. Paint doesn’t have to stay on the walls. Consider painting the trim — door frames, wainscoting, crown molding, window frames, and baseboards — in a fun contrasting color. You can paint the door, as well!
While you’re at it, consider painting simple borders around doors and windows, where the ceiling meets the walls, above the baseboards, and around other features. Scallops are popular, as are simple stripes. You can also achieve more complicated designs with inexpensive stencils — or you can make your own!
