Things are warming up in 2023! According to the experts, the color trajectory for this year is warmer and more vibrant tones, not flashy but rich and inventive. After a long-held reign, the era of neutral tones is nearing its end. If you want to stay current on the paint trends for the new year, the major paint brands have all weighed in on their preferences for 2023.
After a few years of being cooped up and feeling the restrictions of a global pandemic, people are eager to express themselves and let loose with color. People are getting creative with their use of color, mixing different shades in unexpected ways. Personal preference is the clincher on the choice of color schemes, but there are a few themes and paint trends that are sure to be on the rise this coming year.
Rich Reds
You can’t get much bolder than a strong red, and that is no doubt why Graham & Brown have named “Alizarin” their 2023 Color of the Year. This auburn red shade will add depth and warmth to any room, and the blue mixed into the nearly brick red has a soothing effect. Reds and oranges that harken back to the natural hues of terra cotta are bold and impactful, and they pair very nicely with brilliant blues.
Benjamin Moore is on the same paint trend track with its choice of “Raspberry Blush,” a beautifully rich coral, as their 2023 Color of the Year. If you love the dramatic hues native to southern Utah, either of these paints will bring the desert to you. For best effect, apply either Raspberry Blush or Alizarin to a room with lots of natural light.
Magenta to the Max
Pantone’s choice for 2023 is “Viva Magenta,” a bold pink shade similar to the color of a pomegranate. This paint trend is nothing but positive, exuding pure joy while instilling a sense of bravery and fearlessness in all who see it. Combining the majesty of purple with the bold determination of red, “Viva Magenta” will empower all who chose to use it.
Get Used to Green
Green tends to have a soothing effect, and goodness knows we could all use more of that. That’s probably why PPG is highlighting “Vining Ivy” as their 2023 color. “Vining Ivy” is a cooler green, leaning toward the blue side of the green spectrum. The result is a feeling of tranquility and peace. “Spanish Moss,” Krylon’s favorite, serves a similar purpose. This hue is more of a forest green and is sure to pair well with the coppers and golds.
Undervalued Ochre
Yellow is a difficult color to pull off, but the earthy paint trends of 2023 wouldn’t be complete without it. For their Color of the Year 2023, Dulux has chosen “Wild Wonder,” a warm and natural yellow closer to like ochre or gold. This crafty hue can help painters invite a bit of the outdoors inside this year.
Pink Paint Trends
More than one paint provider is pushing for pink this year. Dunn-Edwards is gunning for “Terra Rosa” and Sherwin Williams has named “Redend Point” their Color of the Year for 2023. These paints blend burgundy and brown (or blush and beige) for two neutral pinks that are rosy without being saccharine.
Reminiscent of a conch shell, these hues border on mauve. They are subtle, and so work as grounding and warming neutrals or delicate and almost exotic accents. Consider pairing either “Terra Rosa” or “Redend Point” with some cool blues or greens for schemes reminiscent of the Mediterranean.
A Bit of Black and White
For those not ready to say goodbye to true neutrals just yet, icy whites and soft greige are not completely out the door yet. “Blank Canvas,” a warm white shade, is Behr Paint Company’s Color of the Year for 2023. Use it to make the other trending tones really pop.
Black is not totally off the table either. In fact, we love Sherwin Williams’ “Darkroom,” a beautiful warm black. Other alternatives fit more closely with the other trending rich earthy tones. Consider a deep chocolate with deep violet undertones or go for a heady violet to begin with. Even a near-black green can feel neutral while warming up the color scheme of the room.
